The blood red cross on the white field of eternity, the flag of St George.
George was born at Lydda in the vale of Sharon, about 20 miles from Jerusalem, In around 270 AD. He was a christian and a soldier in the Roman Army.
It was the emporer Galerius who decreed all should pay him honour and all who refused be put to death.
George was imprisoned and tortured but he was steadfast in his Christian belief. He was beheaded on April 23rd 303 AD and this date has been kept as his birthday in heaven.
While serving in the Roman army George was posted to Britain where he was remembered as a brave christian soldier.
His conflict with the Emporer, who's banner was that of a dragon. It is seen as good against evil and battling a dragon is how he is remembered.
George recieved martyrdom for his courage and faith. His body was taken back to Lydda, where it was buried and a rose bush planted on the grave
